NZ to host world rowing champs in 2010

New Zealand has won the right to host the world rowing championships in September, 2010, on Lake Karapiro.

New Zealand won the event ahead of a strong bid by the Netherlands.

The international rowing federation, FISA, says the 1978 world championship at Lake Karapiro was very successful and New Zealand's 2010 bid committee showed they are fully prepared to repeat that, with significant national and local government funding and corporate sponsorship.
Executive director, Matt Smith, says FISA recognises the importance of staging a world championship in a host nation where the public strongly support the team and the sport.
